What is Technorati?

I keep hearing about Technorati. But I wasn’t sure what it was (even after visiting the site). I am a regular reader of DoshDosh and Maki wrote a piece that talks about bookmarklets. So I followed his advice and registered with Technorati and put a bookmarklet on my site.

I also claimed my blog on Technorati. I have an Authority of 3. A rank of 1,800,751 and 1 fan. I still wasn’t sure what this meant. Then this morning ProBlogger explained Authority as the number of sites that are linked to my blog in the last 6 months. Thanks Darren.

After reading the Technorati blog, I discovered that rank is a rating of how popular your blog is. A rank of #1 would make you the most popular site where as a rank of 2 million means you have a couple of million sites to pass, before you make it to #1.

This can be a very useful tool, to see what else is out there, and what other people are looking at. Plus, by including your blog in the rankings you can gain a little exposure.

I guess in the past Technorati was strictly a search for blogs, but now they’ve branched out to all of the popular media, videos etc. One Technorati tool I found useful, is the streamlined Blog Search Engine. An easy way to reseach other blogs in your niche, with out all of the clutter.
