How To Move A Blog

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

My original hosting is with DreamHost. But when I started creating multiple sites I got a resellers account with hostgator. The great thing about the reseller account with hostgator is you can have a separate account for each site, and they use cPanel. But it’s 24 dollars a month.

The best thing about DreamHost is they have great hosting, and one click installs and upgrades. They even give you one free domain a year and you can get great deals on your first year of hosting. For instance using a promo code like Emma90 can save you 90 dollars, so that’s an entire year of hosting for 29.40$.

Occasionally I consider consolidating and moving my DreamHost sites to my HostGator account. But it’s easier to pay for double hosting then going through the hassle of moving. But if I ever change my mind. Pat Doyle just moved her account from DreamHost to HostGator and changed her domain name.

I wanted to make a post about her post so I would have the directions handy, just in case. So here they are; How To Move a WordPress Blog.

Dreamhost allows seperate accounts too. Well, yes and no. It allows seperate FTP accounts for different size, but probably only one admin account. You can’t resell though.

I still think DreamHost is good. But there are a lot of advantages to having a reseller account. Also tools like Domain Dashboard only work with cPanel. But one click WordPress upgrades from DreamHost, are a lot easier then doing it manually or waiting for fantastico to update. DreamHost also has a one click OpenX install which is great if you are planning on running AdSense. Thanks, for visiting kelvin.

Emma: I have moved mouseclone.com several times. It is really easy. Dump database import data base. Change config file with new user/pass and change DNS settings. All done. Let me know if you need help, if you ever really want to do it, and keep your domain.

Thanks for the post about moving your blog. I moved mine about 11 months ago from blogspot to a hosted wordpress blog and decided to just use GoDaddy. I bought the domain through them and it was easy to install the wordpress software.

One thing I found out much later after I did all the work… they don’t keep up with the most current version. That’s a pain… so I’m always behind installing the recent wordpress updates. I called about it and they said that they had to test it first.

While pricing is certainly a considerations, the hassle of moving & all the time involved “fixing” and “learning” is much more significant to me.
