I know many people have strong opinions about their computer set up. But I’m just going to share quick tips that worked for me. Plus I wanted an excuse to post this computer picture I found on a forum by someone named Lois, who is possibly a geek.
If your looking for a bargain desktop PC you can usually find a deal for around 300$ on Woot or some other online dealer. Other people just like to stick with the convenience and portability of a laptop. I like my laptop. But my main computer is a desktop.
My computer purchasing strategy is to buy the top of the line available at the time. Or as close to the top as I can afford. You not only get to enjoy the latest and the greatest at the time. But you can continue to use the same computer for years before having to upgrade.
This saves the hassle of setting up a new system, recycling, transferring software and files etc. At least this seems to be working for me.
I bought a Dell XPS a few years ago. I got the most processing power I could afford which was a 3.2ghz Pentium 4. I’ve since added dual flat panel monitors and I’m up to 4gigs of memory. This older system has been holding up pretty well, except the fan has become noisy.
Turned out there was dust in the fan that was making the noise. So the simple solution was to get a can of pressurized air and blow all of the dust out of the case and the fan and every spot I could find. This solved the problem and I may be able to stretch things out for a while before I upgrade to some kind of crazy multiple processor system.
If you want to find the best deals on compressed air search on line and buy a case, you will save a bundle and always have this handy tool on hand.

I’ve basically taken the opposite approach, but then I don’t do much more than word processing, web surfing and blogging. Seems any computer you get will not be the fastest for long, but if your needs are like mine you might have a computer that does everything you need for a few years (going on 5 for me) and you save a thousand dollars or more each time you buy the cheapest one that meets your needs. Plus, I’m cheap!
