Today I decided to do a little experiment using AdWords. This is my first foray into PPC marketing, and I just put up a quick little ad, directed at this site, to promote my subscriber contest. Google gives you two choices a starter edition and a standard edition with more options.
I went for the starter edition with one ad. I used the keyword tool to find the phrase “win free stuff”. I used only this one keyword phrase, and set a budget of 50$ for the month. This is just an experiment to start learning about using AdWords.
Like I’ve said before, finding out what works for you, through trial and error, is a big part of the learning process. So eventually we have to just start trying things to see what works. Although it doesn’t hurt to learn as much as possible.
The Google learning center offers multimedia AdWords lessons, complete with quizzes at the end. So I guess I’ll work through these before I kick off another campaign.
Here are some more advanced resources that should help us get started:
- The Super Affiliate’s Guide To PPC Marketing
- The Super Affiliates Guide To PPC Marketing on Microsoft AdCenter
Another Useful Web Site:
And just for fun, Mark Weilgus of 45n5, is making videos about his new PPC learning campaigns.
- A Newbie PPC Campaign - The First 24 Hours
- PPC Rockstar - Send Them Home
- Business Card Rapper - VistaPrint Review
- PPC Rockstar - Cards And Gardens
That should be enough to keep me and anyone else, new to PPC busy for awhile. I’ll get back to you about my campaign and let you know what I received for my 50$.

I am very interested as well. We have been online for 6 months now and have done pretty well without buying ads or traffic.
Let me know how that $50 improved your traffic! Be specific… I am waiting!

Thanks for your interest. I will have a follow up post in the future. I’m just learning about AdWords and it’s pretty interesting stuff. I’m not sure if I can be too specific, for instance, I beleive it’s against Google TOS, to say something like I received my first click and it cost, 67 cents. But I will share everything important that I learn. Emma

Emma: I set up an Adwords campaign a few weeks ago to test out the viability of a niche site I was considering developing. I started with just $10 per month since it was just a test. I directed traffic to a Squidoo lens of mine. It provided me with some good insight about some of my keywords for the niche site. Hope you see good results with your campaign.
